Dr. Edwin “Leigh” Armistead is an AEW author and researcher, and his book, “AWACS and Hawkeyes: The Complete History of Airborne Early Warning,” has been recognized as the definitive source on this subject. A former US Navy E-2C Hawkeye Naval Flight Officer (NFO), with significant time in the USAF E-3 Sentry, plus he served as an AEW Exchange tour with the US Marine Corps. He was awarded as the author of the year in “The Hook, Journal of Carrier Aviation”, for his article “Super Fudd: The Development of the E-2A Hawkeye”. Dr. Armistead has also chaired the International Conference on AEW conference six times, plus he is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, plus he received his Master’s in History, with a focus on Military Aviation, specifically with a thesis on the History of AEW. He has conducted a number of consulting / research efforts in the last decade.
